KAPAA — Kai Villanueva of Team Lihue posted a game-high 12 points Tuesday night during the Kaulupono Summer Basketball league games at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa.
But Villanueva’s effort, playing in Division 3 for sixth and seventh grade students, came up short as Hanakila, playing one of three games in Kapaa, walked off with a 40-23 win.
Keawe Cabebe finished with 10 points to lead the Hanakila. Mason Gibson, Hero Raza, and Jesse Zemmel each contributing eight points in the balanced attack.
Lexton Camat fired off 22 points to lead the Hanakila, Division 2, or students in eighth and ninth grades, to a 54-52 edge over Westside Basketball in the second of three matches.
Both teams battled hard before Hanakila pulled ahead in the final three minutes and, despite a concerted Westside challenge in the final seconds, held on for the two-point margin.
Triston Hawelu finished with 15 points in the win. Daniel Yabes added eight points.
Zech Ponting topped the Westside scoring with 12 points followed by Irish Pascua and Joel Soriano who each added 10 points.
Hanakila coach Philip Baclayon and Jerome Hawkins wrapped up a marathon four games in two nights with a 48-40 win over the WMC-A behind a game-high 21 points from Junard Mata and seven points from Kai Maroney.
Johnny Tagaca kept WMC in the game, finishing with 15 points and a lot of hustle followed by Briggs Agu adding 10 points, including two treys.
