LIHUE – Are you and your family prepared for hurricane season? The Kauai Civil Defense Agency is helping families get prepared with a free workshop Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Lihue Neighborhood Center.
Learn from the National Weather Service about the risk for this year’s hurricane season, when an El Nino is expected to increase activity. The Kauai Civil Defense and American Red Cross will cover what supplies to have in your emergency kit and where to go in the event of an evacuation. The Hawaii State Civil Defense will introduce its Hawaii Hazard Awareness Resiliency Program that empowers communities to work together to prepare.
For the home, the University of Hawaii Sea Grant will give tips on how to prepare your home to survive. Topics such as retrofits, building envelopes, roofing, solar photovoltaic, and many other preventative and protective measures will be discussed. Free copies of the Homeowners Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards will be provided.
“Being prepared is the single most important thing you can do for yourself and your family in the event of a natural disaster,” said Civil Defense Manager Glenda Nogami-Streufert. “Our staff and partners will help you get prepared at Saturday’s free workshop. We encourage all residents to attend.”
