The other is “the man behind the lens.”
For the past 20 years, they’ve been the team behind Wala‘au, sharing the stories of Kauai with their viewers.
As much as we like to be the ones telling the stories about Kauai, we have to tip our hat and offer a round of applause to Dickie Chang and Bruce Albert Smalling. In putting together Saturday’s anniversary dinner at the Kauai Marriott Resort, the two co-workers and friends didn’t focus on themselves. They preferred to cast a spotlight on Life’s Bridges and its executive director, Gina Kaulukukui, by dedicating the evening’s proceeds to the nonprofit that’s committed to suicide prevention and awareness on Kauai.
But for a few moments, we’ll go ahead and toss some praise at Dickie and Bruce for their commitment to professionalism and excellence, while also having fun and laughs with a great deal of aloha over the past two decades. The two covered Kauai’s people, places and events that have shaped the island into the place it is today. They’ve been there with the camera rolling to capture not just the news, but the spirit, the very heart, of the place they call home. It’s not just work to them. It’s what they love. Clearly, they care. They are why the locally owned and operated TV program Wala‘au enjoyed such strong success. Kauai is fortunate to have them.
The food, the music, the crowd and the atmosphere were wonderful and it was an honor to be part of Saturday’s 20th anniversary party for Wala‘au. There was no doubt that special feeling in the air that brought a smile to the faces of so many flowed straight from Dickie and Bruce. As Dickie wrote, “This event is a celebration of 20 years of incredible memories and friendships.” It was, indeed.
Well done, gentlemen. Take pride in what you’ve accomplished these past 20 years. We know we do.
