Almost a quarter of a million dollars has been released by Gov. Neil Abercrombie for improvements to be implemented at two Kauai schools.
Eleele Elementary School and Kilauea Elementary School will benefit from a portion of the release of $87.1 million in funding statewide.
The governor announced the release of the funds Thursday, part of which will go toward improving and maintaining various schools statewide, including electrical upgrades, playground equipment repair and maintenance, and other school repairs and renovations.
In Kauai, Building B at Kilauea Elementary School, built in 1940, will get a $1.5 million facelift.
The renovation will make space for additional administrative office support.
Building B housed the school cafeteria until completion of a new cafeteria in 2009.
Currently, the facility is used for storage because there are no utility hookups.
Eleele Elementary School has been granted $714,000 to remedy slope stabilization issues.
The funding will permit the replacement of the existing stone retaining wall along the west school property line which supports adjacent power poles that provide electricity to the campus and is cracking due to settlement and displacement.
The project will also provide drainage improvements to address rain water runoff from the site onto the hillside below.
