This past weekend was one of those marked by many great events on Kauai, and it’s time to give the folks behind them some praise and appreciation.
Let’s start with the 2014 Miss Kauai Filipina Saturday night at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall hosted by the Kauai Filipino Community Council before about 500 people. Kiana Pigao, a recent graduate of Waimea High School, was crowned the winner, while Tamara Akau, a graduate of Kauai High School, was the pageant’s first runner up and Priscilla Lutz, a graduate of Kapaa High School, was the second runner up. Pigao will be competing in the 2014 Miss Hawaii Filipina scholarship pageant later in the summer. It takes dedication, discipline and courage to take the stage before the public. Each participant in Mill Kauai Filipina displayed great poise and dignity and deserves admiration and respect. Kiana will represent Kauai well, and we couldn’t be prouder of her.
We also had the Kilauea Day in the Park on Saturday. With music, food and games for kids, it was a great day to spend with the community. The turnout wasn’t overwhelming, but those who did attend will attest to the good times had by all, especially the kids on the waterslide and those who tried the famous Kilauea chili. Musician Stuart Hollinger, whose CD, “Dangerous Crossing,” won “Rock Album of the Year” at the 37th annual Na Hoku Hanohano Music Awards in Honolulu, put on a terrific performance with the band, “Group Therapy.” Fantastic job to organizers of this event and congrats to Stuart for the recognition of his album.
The 26th annual Taste of Hawaii was Sunday at Smith’s Tropical Paradise. Put on by the Rotary Club of Kapaa, the Taste continues to be a first-rate event with the best of food, drink and music. Mix in the sunshine, wonderful setting, the chance to hang with friends, and it adds up to an unforgettable afternoon. Everyone who attended, and there were many, came away singing the praises of the Taste of Hawaii, which is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club and a benefit for the community.
And finally, we had the Colors of Cancer fun run at Vidinha Stadium on Saturday, the brainchild of Kauai High School alumna Heidi Herr. The fundraiser for the American Cancer Society attracted around 125 people and raised around $500. In the scheme of things in the fight against cancer, not a lot of money. But the heart displayed by Heidi and all who came out is what bonds a community.
Congratulations to all the organizers and participants of these great happenings on Kauai. Examples, one and all, of folks who are making a difference for the better. Well done.
