A Lihue man died Monday after colliding his motorcycle with a vehicle on Kuhio Highway near the Ehiku Street intersection.
The victim was identified Tuesday as Herbert Kelii Kaneholani III, 45.
According to a preliminary investigation, Kaneholani was heading south on the highway around 8 p.m. when his motorcycle hit a Toyota sedan that was attempting to make a left turn from the highway onto Ehiku Street.
Medics transported Kaneholani to Wilcox Hospital where he later died.
Kaneholani was not wearing a helmet. Police said the motorcycle’s speed could have been a factor, although the accident remains under investigation. It marked Kauai’s fifth traffic fatality in 2014.
The 73-year-old male driver of the sedan and his female passenger were not injured.
Kauai Police Dispatch Center reported that some highway lanes were closed around 8:30 p.m.
The highway was reopened around 11 p.m.
