A motorcyclist died Monday night following a traffic crash near the intersection of Kuhio Highway and Ehiku Street in Lihue.
He has been identified as 45-year-old Herbert Kaneholani, III, of Lihue.
According to a preliminary investigation, Kaneholani was heading south on Kuhio Highway at roughly 8 p.m., when his motorcycle collided with a Toyota sedan that was attempting to make a left turn from the highway onto Ehiku Street.
Kaneholani was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Medics transported Kaneholani to Wilcox Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
The 73-year-old male driver of the sedan and his female passenger were not injured.
Kuhio Highway was closed intermittently, from Ahukini Road to WalMart, for roughly three hours while KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted and on-scene investigation and crews worked to clear the roadway.
Traffic was diverted onto Ahukini Road and through the WalMart parking lot until roughly 11 p.m., when all lanes of the highway were reopened.
The crash remains under investigation.
This is Kauai’s fifth traffic fatality of 2014.
