The community of Kauai is invited to the blessing ceremony and unveiling of the island’s new moku signs at noon Friday.
Signs are being placed along Kuhio and Kaumualii highways at the points of entry and exit of each of the five moku on Kauai. A sign representing the moku of Niihau will be placed at MacArthur Park in Kekaha.
Moku locations include Puna-Koolau at the Anahola Marketplace, Koolau-Halelea at the Aina Hou, or Kauai Mini Golf park, Halelea-Napali at the Kee Beach State Park, Napali-Kona at the Polihale State Park close to the last pavilion, Niihau at Koopueo, known as MacArthur Park in Kekaha, and Kona-Puna at the Kahili Mountain Park on the big lawn.
Organizers point out the actual location of the sign for Kona-Puna is at the split in the mountain above Halfway Bridge, but for safety reasons, the blessing will take place at the Kahili Mountain Park.
“Placing these signs will be the first visual reminder of this incredible program which will allow us to once again embrace and utilize Kauai’s traditional land divisions,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. in a release.
During the blessing and unveiling at each of the six sites, the blowing of pu, or conch shells, will take place precisely at noon for six times, representing the six moku, toward Mt. Waialeale.
Kaeo NeSmith, project manager, invites people attending the ceremonies to bring pu to blow as part of the ceremony.
An oli for Kauai by the moku staff, or a Kauai dignitary will precede a speech presented by a community dignitary.
The unveiling will follow with hookupu being offered by the community. The blowing of the pu will close the ceremony.
