Noah and Sophia are America’s most popular baby names for 2013, according to a recent report from the Social Security Agency.
Aside from Jacob and Michael, Noah is the first new boys name at No. 1 since 1960. Sophia has topped the list for girls for three straight years.
In Hawaii, Olivia and Liam topped the list in 2013. Mason, Noah, Ethan and Logan were the other top choices. For girls, Sophia, Ava, Emma and Mia were the runners up.
In the past 12 months at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, three babies named Mason and two named Liam were born, according to spokeswoman Katie Gallo.
Additionally, three girls named Sophia and one named Olivia were born at the Lihue hospital between May 2013 and May 2014.
Katie Burleson and her husband were torn between two of the top names in Hawaii for their baby — Olivia and Sophia.
“We started out with about 20 names and narrowed them down to two. I was so convinced it was going to be a boy, even when we were in the waiting room,” Burleson said.
Hours later, Burleson gave birth to a baby girl.
“When it came right down to it, Sophia was the easier name for our two-and-a-half year old, Abigail, to say. So we named our baby Sophia,” Burleson said. “I’ve always liked that name.”
If she gives birth to another girl, Burleson said she will name her Olivia.
Megan and Todd Hadley went for a more original name than is typically heard after Megan gave birth on May 9 at Wilcox. They wanted an ocean name, especially after living in Hawaii for the past seven years.
“We wanted something that captured the feel of the ocean and the beautiful nature here,” Megan said. “Our other boys are named Tanner, Garrett and Jack. They all love the water and surfing.”
The newborn’s name — Reef.
“We also wanted something short and sweet,” Hadley said.
The Social Security Agency began compiling the baby name list in 1997, with names dating to back to 1880.
Over the past 100 years, the most popular boy’s names have been James, John, Robert, Michael and William. The top girl names are listed as Mary, Patricia, Jennifer, Elizabeth and Linda.
At the time of a child’s birth, parents supply the name to the agency when applying for a child’s Social Security card, thus making the agency America’s source for the most popular baby names.
