Case against atrazine is strong
Tyrone Hayes sure gave a riveting presentation on atrazine Wednesday night at KCC. He obviously knows frogs and the problems frogs experience with the Endocrine Disrupter Chemical known as atrazine. While chemical company spokesmen will claim that Hayes’ experiments cannot be replicated, Hayes has been corroborated by several scientists who show in peer-reviewed published papers that atrazine will convert testosterone to estrogen in all vertebrates; frogs, fish, rabbits, mice, and yes, people.
The subjective evidence that birth defects on Kauai’s West Side exceeds 10 times the national average begs the question as to why the Hawaii Department of Health, under Laura Lingle, stopped collecting this data in 2005. Maybe the subjective evidence is wrong, but Kauai citizens must demand a thorough and comprehensive investigation.
The case against atrazine is as strong as that in support of climate change. Those who choose to ignore these problems may not have to live with the consequences but those consequences will be visited upon their grandchildren.

Libertarians offer real choices, open minds
The illusion of choice. Republican or Democrat, Coke or Pepsi, Burger King or McDonald’s. Yes, politically, most Americans live in a world of black and white and are under the impression that there is no gray area, as if nothing exists in the middle. Libertarians see it differently. You see, folks, things are not as cut and dry as you are led to believe. I know many enjoy living in what they perceive as being more comfortable, safer, some would say thought and worry free life, almost as if they believe that if they ignore reality then it doesn’t exist or at least doesn’t affect them. People are so content with the status quo, a broken government and corrupt political system. If folks were to peer out from their conditioning they would know the potential we have as a species. Look at how far we’ve progressed in the last hundred years. Unfortunately, it seems we are regressing as a species. If more people were to realize that we are free, independent human beings we could do so much more. Sometimes I feel like I’m living in the movie Idiocracy. Only when people open their minds will we have the chance to evolve. I encourage folks to do so. Take some time to research libertarianism. Most people are more libertarian than they think. Only when you erase the lines and realize the left/right paradigm is a form of oppression and control can we evolve. I urge you to give it some thought.

Harlem Ambassadors enjoyed Kauai visit
On May 17, the Leadership Kauai hosted the Harlem Ambassadors professional show basketball team for a night of high-flying slam dunks, hilarious comedy, and feel-good family entertainment. The Harlem Ambassadors would like to extend a special thank you to event organizers Char Ravelo and Kaleo Carvalho who planned and promoted the game. The Kauai All-Stars proved to be an energetic and enthusiastic challenging team and we thank all of the players for their good sportsmanship. The event would not have been possible without the support and generosity of local community sponsors, the Leadership Kauai members, and the event volunteers.
The Harlem Ambassadors thank the community of Lihue for its warm hospitality and look forward to returning to Lihue in the future.
