WAIMEA – A tale of love and survival is returning to the Waimea Historic Theatre today. The Hawaii touring play “Legend Of Koolau,” which received a national grant for its start on the Garden Island, will run again for one day only.
The play written by Gary T. Kubota, is a historical drama about the life of Hawaiian cowboy Kaluaikoolau and his family in West Kauai fighting for their rights amid the chaos and loss of sovereignty in 1893.
Koolau fought a rebel militia that had overthrown the Hawaiian monarchy and wanted to enforce leprosy laws that would force him and his son to a settlement at Kalaupapa known to Hawaiians as the “Living Grave.”
Showtime is 2:30 p.m.
The play had its premiere on Kauai in early March at the Waimea Historic Theater, a couple of miles from where Kaluaikoolau lived. Actor Moronai Kanekoa will be reprising the role.
Legend of Koolau is a National Performance Network Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by Maui Arts & Cultural Center, in partnership with the Waimea Historic Theater and NPN.
Tickets may be purchased by going online to the WaimeaTheatre.com or by calling 645-0996.
