LIHUE — Ernest Kaneakua of the Kauai Police Commission said his great-uncle died as a law enforcement officer on Maui.
“We go as a family each year to visit his grave,” Kaneakua said Thursday during a short memorial ceremony held at the Kauai Police and Civil Defense building. “Each day, these enforcement officers put their lives on the line, not knowing whether they’ll be returning home. We need to take time to say ‘Thank You’ to them for their selfless sacrifice.”
As part of National Police Week, the Kauai Police Department remembered the fallen Hawaii enforcement people, the names being read by members of the 85th Recruit Class before a solemn audience of police officers, leaders and other dignitaries.
