Kawena Warren posted a personal best time in the girls 100 meter hurdles to help lead the Waimea girls team to 19th place at the Island Movers Hawaii High School Athletic Association state track and field championships on Oahu.
Wrapping up Saturday afternoon at the Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama facility, Warren finished the girls 100 meter hurdles with a 15.44-second run, good for third place in the event, besting her Kauai Interscholastic Federation mark of 15.62 set at home during the KIF championships.
Other KIF student-athletes in action were Natalie Nishioka of Kauai High School, who finished 19th (17.36) in the girls 100 meter hurdles during the preliminaries Friday along with Waimea’s Leann Lopez (17.77). This was one of Nishioka’s finest runs, bettering her No. 3 finish in the KIF championship at 17.68.
The Menehune wahine was the sole KIF team to place at the state meet, finishing 19th of 26 teams with 7.50 points. Seabury Hall topped the girls team rankings with 73 points.
Warren, finishing in a five-way tie at 4 feet, 8 inches, settled at No. 13 in the girls high jump. Talia Young, another Waimea senior, finished tied for fifth place with Shatres Ah Nee of Campbell High School, both girls clearing 5-00.
During the KIF season, seven girls jumped for state heights, and following Young and Warren, Waimea’s Taylor Gaspar made the finals with a leap of 15-00.75 in the Friday preliminaries, and Island School’s Allison Culliney had honorable mention leaps.
On the boys’ field, Kauai High School senior Christian Sarmiento leaped to a four-way tie for eighth place with Xzavier Robinson of Leilehua, Kayson Smith Bejgrowicz of Kamehameha-Kapalama, and Jacob Higa of Seabury at 6-00.
Travis Anderson of Kapolei High School nailed sixth place on a solid 6-00 leap, and Sarmiento, despite clearing 6-00 on one of three tries, was relegated to eighth place based on number of tries to clear. His season best was 6-00.50.
Waimea’s Henry Delos Reyes earned an honorable mention in the event.Island School senior Chan Hsu ran her season-best in the girls 1,500 meter run, crossing the line at 5:01.35 for eighth place. Her season-best prior to the state meet stood at 5:04.55.
