NAWILIWILI — Fast Company came back from a faulty start to take Top Elapsed Time honors Thursday during the fifth race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Rum Series.
Jockeying in heavy traffic at the start, Fast Company fouled, slipping across the start plane just a smidgen ahead of the start horn.
The correction sent the Olson 30 to the near back of the pack as she went against the traffic of eight boats to restart.
As is the nature of the Jim Saylor crew, the Olson 30 battled back through the four-leg, 5.63-mile course in 10 to 15 knot winds out of the east-northeast, eventually crossing on an elapsed sail of 1 hour, 12 minutes, 28 seconds, holding a nice lead over second finisher Papaau, an Express 27, which crossed at 1:13:06.
The battle for third in the elapsed sail came down to just five seconds separating third and fourth place as Chaos, a Hobie 33, slipped across at 1:14:51, five ticks ahead of Trinity, the fleet-footed F-28 trimaran which sounded the horn at 1:14:56.
The top boat to finish, however, was bumped from the PHRF class as Papaau corrected to 1:09:59 PHRF, ahead of Fast Company’s 1:12:28 PHRF time.
Third place honors in the PHRF class went to Rebel, a Wells 27, who crossed at 1:29:23 elapsed and corrected to 1:13:33 PHRF.
Weatherly, one of three Olson 30s on the water, crossed at 1:15:02 elapsed and corrected to 1:15:09 PHRF, finishing just 10 seconds ahead of Chaos who corrected to 1:15:19 PHRF.
Trinity, after gaining a nice lead off the start and through the midway point, corrected to 1:05:15 Club for top honors in that class.
Second place honors in the Club class went to Coyote, a C&C 38 who crossed at 1:24:02 elapsed, corrected to 1:18:42 PHRF for sixth place and 1:06:08 Club for runner-up honors in the class.
Chaos captured third place on a correction to 1:06:56 Club.
Race No. 6 of the seven-race series continues Thursday and the NYC Race Committee invites people to view the competition from the vantage point of the jetty wall when first flags fly at 5 p.m.
