KAPAA — A lady holding a bird was the source of inspiration for Sally Harrison, the St. Catherine School after-school coordinator.
“I called the artist, Caren Loebel Fried of the Big Island, and asked her if I could use the image for my Hawaiian Madona and child,” Harrison said, interrupting her preparation work for the annual carnival. “She graciously said yes and I could proceed with the work.”
The mural, measuring eight feet by eight feet, was unveiled Thursday following the annual May Crowning mass where the school’s students honored Mary at a school mass.
“The students were all under the entertainment tent (for the St. Catherine’s Carnival) and when the canvas covering the mural was dropped following the blessing by Father Anthony Rapozo, there were gasps of amazement,” said Celina Haigh, the St. Catherine School principal. “The students were in awe.”
Harrison, who holds a degree in graphic arts, said the mural is the first piece she’s ever displayed.
“I want to thank Celina for the opportunity of doing this,” Harrison said. “I’ve never done anything like this. I’m humbled because this is the first piece I’ve ever displayed.”
Elements of Harrison’s study in graphic arts shine through the mural in the form of the strong colors and designs resembling woven rattan.
“I love the kids,” Harrison said. “They touch my heart. They give so much love and inspiration.”
Anchored on one wall of the school’s buildings, patrons visiting the St. Catherine Carnival this weekend can be treated to a view of the mural located kiddie corner from the entertainment tent.
