In its second year, this might be one of Kauai’s best events. It has a strong following, it’s for a wonderful cause and it’s put on by a great group. It’s this Sunday, but you probably don’t have any idea what we’re talking about.
Let’s change that.
The second Boy’s Day Poker Scramble is expected to attracted some 400 riders to the Omao riding area about a half mile west of the Tree Tunnel. It is in memory of Kapa Moke, Jr.
“This is a real community effort,” said Bertram Almeida, president of the Garden Island Motorcycle Club, which is putting on the event.
The basic info first: Gates open at 6:30 a.m., registration is at 7 and races start at 9 a.m. There are four divisions, expert, intermediate, novice and beginner and quads. Cost is $35 for adults, $20 for children 12 and under. There will also be prizes, shaved ice and a fish pond for children.
It’s a day of competition, cooperation and camaraderie on a track and course that takes motorcycle riders out on some rolling hills.
“It’s a real family, fun event, said Almeida, caretaker and developer of the track. “So many businesses and people come out and help, that place is phenomenal.”
This is an event that isn’t relying on county money. The Garden Island Motorcycle Club, with the backing of many sponsors, gives 100 percent of its efforts into making it an outstanding experience for spectators and competitors. These are folks who step up for their community and we applaud them. Our wish is this event, in memory of Kapa Moke, Jr., receives the recognition it deserves.
If you have a chance, drop by the Boy’s Day Poker Scramble. We believe you’ll find out this is another little-known gem that makes Kauai shine.
