PUHI — Kapaa High School and Kauai High School boys volleyball teams needed to win their respective matches Saturday to force a playoff game on Tuesday.
The Warriors lived up to their end, taking the Island School Voyagers in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-10 and 25-15 in a lunchtime showdown. The earlier game time was agreed to because of Kapaa High School’s prom Saturday night.
Kapaa gained a lead behind the hitting of Nicholas Hantz and Rudy Agoot.
Johnny Joel, the normal middle for Kapaa, was at a prior commitment and Kayden Palenapa stepped in nicely for the middle blocker, who got some help from Kristoffer Astrero and Hantz during rotations.
Island School came prepared, opening the first set by staying with Kapaa up through the 14th point before the Warriors pulled away for its 25-19 win.
Coming from a 5-2 deficit, the Voyagers’ Micah Kimi pulled Island School to within one, 5 to 4. The exchange continued as Kapaa exchanged points between the hitting of Island School’s David Caminos, Kimi and Emanuel Zafrides before Kapaa put away the game behind Hantz’s power hitting.
Agoot controlled the offense in the second set, which belonged to Kapaa from the onset.
Earlier in the morning, the Kapaa junior varsity took a 2-1 win over the Voyagers, 25-22, 24-26, 25-17.
If Kauai beats Waimea boys Saturday night, a playoff game will take place Tuesday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa. The results of the game weren’t available by press time.
