LIHUE — Two documents showing proof of residency are now required to get a Hawaii driver’s license or a state ID card.
According to a County of Kauai announcement on Friday, beginning Thursday, document originals or copies must be presented with the applicant’s name and address as proof of residency. This may include a current Hawaii driver’s license, vehicle registration or title, voter registration card, or other mail from a government or medical entity that is not more than two months old.
Other acceptable documents that have an applicant’s name and address and are also not more than two months old include a utility bill, a checking or savings account statement, a payroll check or stub. A federal or Hawaii income tax return from the previous year, current property tax assessment and similar documents are also acceptable.
The new driver’s license and state ID requirement is in addition to the other documents already needed to show proof of legal presence, and is part of the state’s efforts to become compliant with the federal Real ID Act of 2005.
Also effective on May 1, the fee for a state ID on Kauai will increase to $4 a year or a total of $32. The card will be valid for eight years.
