KALAHEO — A 51-year-old Kalaheo man remains hospitalized after a four-hour standoff with police ended without injury Thursday night.
According to a County of Kauai press release, police responded to a popular hunting area off Puuwai Road after residents reported hearing yelling and possible gun shots around 8 p.m.
Officers located an armed suspect who was alone at the time. Puuwai Road was closed to set up a safe perimeter as KPD Special Services Team and crisis negotiators responded to the scene.
After about four hours of negotiations, police secured a surrender without incident. Puuwai Road was reopened around midnight.
The suspect was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation where he remains hospitalized at this time.
No charges have yet been filed against the suspect. Police are continuing to investigate this incident.
