LIHUE — A Kaumakani woman who accompanied an armed co-defendant in making life-threatening statements was sentenced to a year in jail and probation Wednesday in 5th Circuit Court.
Alana Maria Kauiokuhome Santiago-Lumabao, 21, was sentenced for a first-degree terroristic threat stemming from an incident against two women on July 26, 2013. She engaged in fighting or threatening with intent to cause substantial bodily harm while holding a machete.
Judge Kathleen Watanabe said the court would honor the plea agreement and sentence Santiago-Lumabao to a four-year term of probation for the felony charge. The jail term would come with credit for the seven months time already served.
Santiago-Lumabao pleaded no contest to first-degree terroristic threat on Dec. 16, 2013.
Court-appointed attorney Rosa Flores said the defendant should have chosen to part company with the co-defendant, Hapaki Mainaaupo, when he displayed weapons and began making criminal threats.
But County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Shauna Lee Cahill said Santiago-Lumabao played an active role, carrying the machete at one point and some witnesses claimed she was holding a gun at another time.
The judge said it was a serious charge and recommended Santiago-Lumabao undergo anger management classes and a substance abuse evaluation.
The co-defendant, Hapaki Mainaaupo, 20, of Kekaha pleaded no contest to first-degree terroristic threat on Dec. 16, 2013. He was charged with showing a firearm during the threat and was sentenced to four years in jail as a youth offender, in combination with seven other charges in five cases, including robbery with a firearm, assault, assault of a police officer and disorderly conduct.
