LIHUE — Kapaa’s Bryden Salvador and Naea Oda earned qualifying spots to the David S. Ishii Foundation Hawaii High School Athletic Association state golf championships Saturday.
Salvador and Oda, both strong contenders throughout the Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf season, earned the boys and girls individual slots following the two-day qualifying golf matches at the Wailua Golf Course. The pair will join the Kauai High School boys and girls teams at the state tournaments next week on Oahu.
Additionally, by winning the 36-hole qualifying tournament, which also took place at the Poipu Bay Golf Course, both golfers earn KIF top individualist honors.
Salvador set the pace early, finishing the opening round with a two-over par 74.
He improved that performance in growing winds Saturday at the Wailua course, finishing the round at a one-over par 73 for a two-day 147.
Oda ended the first round tied with Kauai’s Hiilani Alana at 86, but pulled ahead in the second round, finishing at 80 for a two-day 166.
Alana, a member of the Kauai girls team, tumbled to a second round 96 for a two-day 182.
Kari Whitworth, an Island School senior who took to the KIF field for the first time this season, finished seven strokes back at 189 (97-92), her second-day score was the second-best girls’ round.
Samantha Nichols topped the Waimea girls at 200 (98-102) followed by Kawena Warren (109-99-208).
Salisa Pegeder (115-111-226), Dillyn Sakai (118-110-228), Sharae Cua (123-114-237), Kiri Oshiro (132-113-245), and Bailee Taeza (131-119-250) rounded out the field,
On the boys’ course, Kauai’s team filled in the second through fifth spots, led by Bryden Salvador (75-81-156), who finished nine strokes off Salvador’s pace.
Jamie Amimoto (83-78-161), Keith Jose (79-83-162), and Jacob Viquelia (81-84-165) filled in the leaderboard.
Kapaa’s Kainalu Gandia, battling Salvador for the qualifying boys’ individualist spot, filled in the No. 6 position at 166 (82-84), just a stroke back of Viquelia.
Vance Tokita (92-86-178), Mitchell Alves (101-81-182), Tyshawn Cain (91-95-186), Jeremy Felizardo (91-101-193), Adam Sclafani (93-103-196), Jordan Serrano (104-94-198), Jacob Dysinger (107-101-208), Dylan Desilva (114-106-220), Ian Castro (108-113-221), and Zack Knight (104-123-227) rounded out the field.
The KIF girls will compete at the David Ishii Foundation/HHSAA golf championships Monday and Tuesday at the Turtle Bay Fazio Golf Course on Oahu’s North Shore.
The boys follow on April 30 and May 1 at the Turtle Bay Palmer Golf Course.
