LIHUE — Police and fire rescuers recovered a male body from Kalalau Valley Thursday afternoon.
A county news release on Saturday said that Kauai Fire Department was notified of a possible missing hiker at around noon on Thursday. A friend of the missing person reported that the two set out Tuesday to hike into the valley from the beach, where they had been camping.
After short time later the friend turned back when the terrain became very dangerous. The victim continued on and hadn’t returned to the beach as of Thursday morning, the report said.
KFD Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 conducted an aerial search of the area. They located a man’s body deep in the valley at around 1:30 p.m.
Responders radioed to Kauai Dispatch to notify police and an investigator was flown to the scene. The case remains under investigation, but police are saying that foul play is not suspected at this time.
An autopsy is scheduled for early next week. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
