Playing in the boys first singles, Murakami, despite a strong opening set, fell to Island Schools’ Davis Huffman, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 for one of the Warriors’ losses on the boys courts.
The loss gave Island School boys the Kauai Interscholastic Federation title, 3-2 as Kapaa’s Justin Hatchell, pairing with Shawn Yamane, dropped its second doubles to the Island School duo of Francis Green and James Papa.
Kapaa got in the winner’s column when Matt Steinohrt, playing on the second singles court, got past Island School’s Eric Potter, 6-0, 6-1.
The Warriors followed the win with a victory on the boys first doubles court when Kai and Wyatt Harrison took their match, 6-2, 6-2.
Marlon Cudiamat, teaming with Joshua “Bear” Zietz, gave Kapaa its advantage on the third doubles court with a 6-1, 6-1 win over the Voyager pair of Quentin Allen and Andrew Anderton.
Girls
Island School captured the KIF girls tennis title with a 4-1 win over Kapaa, with the Warriors’ third doubles team of Angelika Questin and Chelsea Ferrer taking the lone Kapaa victory, 7-5, 6-4.
Island School prevailed over the remaining matches when Michaela Fitzgerald set the stage in the first singles court with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Kapaa’s Kiara Tamayose.
The Voyagers continued their roll after Alex Obert, playing on the second singles court, took three sets to get past Casey Nakamura, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1).
Island School’s Katy Davidson and Ajai Scalafari defeated Kapaa’s Amber Diaz and Frenses May Nono, 6-0, 6-1 on the first doubles court and the Voyagers rounded out their string of victories when Julia Randolph-Flagg, pairing with Whitney Summerhays, got past the Warrior pair of Cassady Yatsko and Kayla Takamura in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
With Kapaa and Island School holding the KIF titles for boys and girls, respectively, the qualifying matches for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championships take place starting Thursday.
Greg Gonsalves, the athletic director for Kapaa High School, said Thursday’s matches will have the boys playing at the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts while the girls pair off at the Kauai Community College tennis courts. Both locations start play from 8 a.m.
The qualifying finals will be played Friday at the Kauai Community College courts, also at 8 a.m.
