NAWILIWILI — The quarter drive is over — for the most part.
Ron Wiley, KQNG Radio Group on-air personality, conducted a quarter drive to benefit the Kauai Independent Food Bank in celebration of his 25 years with KQNG radio.
The drive ended on April 1, coinciding with his anniversary date, but the quarters kept rolling in.
“Don’t forget the Tiger Cub Scouts from Pack 148 on Saturday,” Leona Perez of the KIFB told Wiley on Monday. “The Tigers are going to visit you with their quarters Saturday morning. They were going last week, but were tied up with the Boy Scout Makahiki so they’re going this week.”
Wiley said the quarter drive was a brainchild of his wife Laura, who suggested a quarter for a quarter of a century with KQNG.
Wiley’s quarter drive gained momentum over its two-week time span.
“This was a do able project,” Wiley said. “Everyone, from keiki to the editor of The Garden Island, wanted to help me celebrate my 25 years of being with KQNG radio. And, it benefits the Kauai Independent Food Bank.”
The drive really came to a close Monday when Wiley unpacked a large jar, several coin bank bags, and an envelope with checks, soliciting the help of Kelvin Moniz, KIFB executive director, and Rowena Cobb, KIFB board president, in help counting out all the coins.
They stacked up to more than $2,000.
“I appreciate and thank all of the people who contributed to Ron’s quarter drive,” Moniz said. “And thank you to Ron for helping feed our hungry people.”
Moniz, said volunteers collected more than $2,600 during the Food Drive Collection Day Saturday.
