LIHUE — Kauai High School tennis closed out its 2014 Kauai Interscholastic Federation season Saturday on a winning note.
Its boys took a 4-1 win over Waimea and the girls took a 3-2 edge over the Menehune at the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts.
Now, it’s on to the state qualifying tournament, which starts this week.
Marcus Pereira picked up Waimea’s sole victory on the boys’ court with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kauai’s Mitchell Evan on the first singles court.
Kainoa started the ball rolling for Kauai, defeating Waimea’s Bradly Lumabao, 6-1, 6-4 on the second singles court.
Kauai swept the boys doubles, the first doubles team of Clinton Sibolboro and Byeong Lee getting past the Menehune duo of Bradley Cano, normally a first singles player, and Chris Corpuz, 6-4, 6-3 in what Kauai coach Charles Fulks described as an “exciting, hard-hitting match.”
On the second boys doubles court, the Raider duo of Joshua Agpaoa and Koa Cierras used three sets to get past the Waimea pair of Gilson Guillermo and Marc Serapio, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
“This was a very close match,” Fulks said. “It could have gone either way.”
Akira Takabayashi teamed with Josh Matsuyama on the boys third doubles court to defeat Waimea’s Christian Fostanes and Robbie Jiao, 6-1, 6-2.
Kauai singles girls dropped both their matches before the girls doubles came back to take the advantage.
Stephanie Gushikuma, battling through several opportunities to close out the second set, dropped to Waimea’s Shalyn Jim, 4-6, 5-7 on the first singles court.
Waimea’s Kylah Gruspe defeated Kauai’s Tori Pagador, 6-1, 6-2 on the second singles court.
Fulks said Kaylin Kukino was “on fire,” when she teamed with Madison Rayno to defeat the Waimea duo of Rhea Arios and Julia Hirano, 6-1, 6-2 on the first doubles court.
Teyanni Esaki paired with Mahina Tangonan to get past Waimea’s Hope Coyaso and Rochelle Dela Cruz, 6-3, 6-3 in second doubles.
Kauai’s Rachel Marshall and Dareen Dameg iced the Red Raider sweep, picking up their first win of the season in a tight match against Waimea’s Karla Bermudez and Janelle Papa on the girls third doubles arena. Marshall and Dameg eked out a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory.
Following a seed meeting today at Kauai High School, the state qualifying tournament gets underway Thursday and Friday.
According to Sam Henriques, the Kapaa High School trainer, matches will take place at both the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts and the Kauai Community College tennis courts starting at 8 a.m. both days.
