LIHUE — Kauai County Council member Mel Rapozo remembers the experience of “walking a mile” in her shoes, a pair of red high heels, Wednesday during the Kauai County Council meeting.
“We still have a lot of 8-and-a-half shoes,” said Renae Hamilton of the YWCA of Kauai. “This year, we’re moving the Walk A Mile in Her Shoes to the Kukui Grove Center on April 26.”
Hamilton was joined by Patricia Wistinghausen of the PAU Violence Committee and Edie Ignacio Neumiller of the Zonta Club of Kauai in accepting a council certificate recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event started at the Kauai Community College when male students took a stand against rape, sexual assault and gender violence.
The groups will host “It’s A Girl” documentary at the Kauai Community College, Daniel K. Inouye Technology Center on April 23.
These events provide opportunities for the community to learn more about sexual assault and to join efforts to end this violence on Kauai.
