WAIMEA — Waimea High School’s softball team started the second round of the season with a 14-2 win on its home diamond against Kapaa on Wednesday.
After a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the first inning, senior designated player Jacelynn Sabala-Rapanot hit a 3-run double to give the Menehune the lead.
The runs continued to pour in for Waimea (6-0-1, 1-0 in second round) until play ended after the top of the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
“The girls did what we told them to do,” said Waimea head coach Teddy Perreira. “We’ve been working hard on offense all week because Kapaa has good bats in their lineup too.”
Senior shortstop Sienna Santiago was one of the Menehune’s best hitters of the night with two singles, a triple and two RBIs.
“I was just waiting for her to throw me a good pitch,” Santiago said. “I haven’t been really consistent on the plate. So, I tried to just see the ball and hit it.
“Our coach was always telling us to never give them second chances. So we tried to cut down on our errors and we just played a good game,” she added.
Kapaa head coach Aulani Kaui said her team just couldn’t produce hits to make a game of it.
“We prepared hard, but our bats were flat today,” the Warriors coach said. “We got hitters on our team. They just didn’t come ready to hit. Basically, they outhit us.”
Junior catcher Aliyah Cummings hit a double and a single for the Warriors.
“I was just waiting for my pitch, one that I know I can hit,” Cummings said. “(Just wanted to) help my team out.”
Kapaa (3-3-1, 0-1 in second round) will host Kauai for a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game will begin at 10 a.m.
Waimea will play Kauai at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Isenberg Park.
