LIHUE — Liza Cabal Trinidad of Kauai Nurse Aide Training Center in the Dynasty Court wanted to know what was taking place with all the people gathered on the sidewalk.
The Childrens Justice Center, along with The Friends of the Childrens Justice Center, commemorated April being child abuse prevention month with an open house and blessing of its facility.
“I didn’t even know they were there,” Cabal Trinidad said. “I usually don’t even see the people, so I’m glad they are doing this so people can learn about them.”
During the open house, director Jessell Kerr and Rose Carrillo, a longtime staff member, distributed child abuse prevention materials, including the blue pinwheels set up at the state Department of Health earlier in the day.
The Kauai Children’s Justice Center is an accredited member of the National Children’s Alliance, an organization of more than 750 Children’s Advocacy Centers across America serving abused children and their supportive families.
In Hawaii, approximately 4,000 cases of child abuse are reported annually with the Children’s Justice Centers in Hawaii receiving an average of 1,200 reports.
