LIHUE — A Hanapepe man was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday in 5th Circuit Court for charges relating to copper theft at the old Kekaha mill in 2012.
Jon Lopez Ceda, 43, was sentenced to concurrent five-year prison terms for felony second-degree burglary. He was given another year in jail for a misdemeanor charge of possessing burglar’s tools that will run together with the felony sentence.
“You will get credit for time served,” said Judge Kathleen Watanabe said to Ceda in court. “Everyone is in agreement. Do good time.”
Both the prosecution and defense asked for a jail sentence without probation.
State Deputy Public Defender Stephanie Sato said Ceda was eligible for probation but had just started serving a 16-month sentence for an unrelated federal conviction in February. Ceda had been sentenced in Honolulu for possession of a firearm after having been previously convicted of a crime.
During the copper theft on Sept. 17, 2012, witnesses observed flashlights on in the Old Kekaha Sugar Cane Mill. The police were called and they arrested Ceda for theft of copper of one pound or more.
