PUHI — Waimea High School and Island School split its series Saturday during the final Island School home stand at the Kauai Community College tennis courts.
On the boys’ courts, Davis Huffman of Island School battled to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win over Waimea’s Bradley Cano in first singles.
“Davis is a tough competitor,” said Adrian Alvarez, the Waimea coach. “Bradley lost to him on their last meeting, but this time, this was one of the best matches I’ve seen this season.”
Huffman picked up Island School’s sole win on the boys’ courts. Waimea’s Marcus Oereira defeating Island School’s Eric Potter, 6-1, 6-1 on the second singles arena.
“Island School is still on spring break so they only had four boys here today,” Alvarez said. “They defaulted on the boys second and third doubles.”
On the boys first doubles court, Waimea’s Bradly Lumabao teamed with Chris Corpuz to win over Island School’s pair of Quentin Allen and Andrew Anderton, 6-2, 6-0.
The girls’ arena had a full slate of action, Island School walking off with a 4-1 win over the Menehune girls.
Lani Rae Green picked up the sole Waimea victory on the girls court, taking the win over Island School’s Michaela Fitzgerald, 6-0, 6-0 in the girls first singles.
The remainder of the day belonged to Island School as Alex Obert edged past Waimea’s Shaylin Jim, 6-4, 6-3 in girls second singles.
On the doubles court, Katy Davidson paired with Ajai Scalafari to defeat Waimea’s duo of Kyla Gruspe and Diane Gawaran, 6-0, 6-0 on the girls first doubles court.
Whitney Summerhays teamed with Julie Randolph-Flagg to get past the Waimea pair of Rhea Arios and Julia Hirano, 6-3, 6-3 on the girls second doubles court, and in the final match of the day, Island School’s Kalena Wong paired with Mabel Kha to get past the Menehune pair of Hope Coyaso and Rochelle Dela Cruz in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Island School next travels to the Kapaa High School tennis courts to meet with the Warriors at 10 a.m. Saturday while the Menehune visits the Kauai Lagoons tennis courts to meet Kauai High School, also at 10 a.m.
