KOKEE — A 25-year-old male visitor from Buffalo, N.Y., was airlifted from Waimea Canyon at 7:37 a.m. Sunday after spending the night in the woods. He had become disoriented while hiking the night before and was flown to Waimea Canyon School Park and later released as he did not sustain any injuries.
The man had been hiking Saturday when he became disoriented. He contacted his mother via cellphone. She then called the Waimea fire station at about 6:02 p.m. and informed them that her son was lost in Waimea Canyon near Waipoo Falls. She noted that he was uninjured and had no existing medical conditions. She also said that her son’s Nissan sedan was in the Waipoo Falls parking lot.
The search was discontinued at nightfall. But Sunday morning, rescue specialists found the lost hiker next to the stream below Waipoo Falls, loaded him on Air 1 and flew to Waimea Canyon School Park.
