Miguel Baldera’s Chalupa coed soccer team came back with a pair of second-half goals to edge past Pono Kai and claim the title of the Kauai Coed Soccer League 2014 Winter Season at the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Sports Park in Wailua recently.
Phillip Chin put Pono Kai up early after netting his goal in the third minute of play for the 1-0 lead at the break of the highly defensive first half.
Six minutes into the second half, Chalupa knotted the game when Paco Aguilar equalized the match off a cross to the back post.
In the fight for the lead, Leon Pellicer capitalized off a Pono Kai defensive slip to put Chalupa up 2-1.
With time remaining on the clock, Pono Kai had several opportunities to tie the game but none made it to the back of the net, said Kenneth Kimura of the coed league.
The Kauai Coed Soccer is affiliated with the Hawaii Soccer Association and plays Tuesdays at the Weinberg sports park soccer fields in a seven-a-side format.
Rules state that one female must be on the field at all times and the teams consist of females 18 and older and males 35 and older.
Kimura said the league is open to players of all skill levels and welcomes anyone interested in participating.
He said a one-day coed, seven-a-side tournament is scheduled for the near future and the summer season of Kauai Coed Soccer scheduled to start in May.
During the interim, pick up games are played at the Weinberg sports park on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.
