Among the offering of bettas, or more commonly known as fighting fish, are specimen which have direct familial links to winning fish, said Liz Hahn.
Hahn of Kauai Bettas, said she was thrilled to learn that 19 of her 24 submitted fish earned awards at the recent Golden State Bettas IBC International, Area 1 show which wrapped up March 22 in California.
“To win a show with few fish is not a very big deal,” Hahn said. “But to win in a show with a lot of fish is very awesome.”
The Golden State Bettas show featured 270 entries for fish breeding in regular classes, six in wild classes, and 16 in new breeder classes for a total of 300 fish competing for awards.
Hahn’s strongest showing came in the Halfmoon ST Solid Color, Dark Metallic Solid STF where she earned first and third place in a field of 17 fish.
Hahn finished the show with nine first place awards, including five in the Halfmoon ST Solid Color division, and three in the Halfmoon ST Patterned division and topping the prestigious Form and Finnage competition in the Breeders Division.
Additionally, the Westside betta breeder earned six second places including four in the Halfmoon ST Solid Color and two in the Halfmoon ST Patterned class, rounding out her winnings with two third place finishes in the Solid Color and Patterned classes.
Larissa Williams, a certified betta judge since 2009 and one of the judges at the Golden State show, said Hahn’s fish were incredible.
“Her halfmoon bettas are always excellent form with full finnage in good proportion, and they’re healthy and happy,” Williams said in an email. “Judging is a long process as we compare faults on the fish competing, and Liz’s bettas always rise to the top and stay there as they continue to show off and let the judges see them flaring in full display.
