NUKOLII — Sheena Tuazon of Deep Kauai was up late Monday readying the T-shirts and caps.
“My husband came up with the design, and we fiddled with it for a couple of days before finalizing everything,” Tuazon said. “We also added the trucker’s cap for this year’s offering.”
David Sosner, general manager of the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort and chair of the 36th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk, said this is the first time the event will be using a local vendor to supply the shirts.
More than 100 people gathered at the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort for the launch of the 2014 Charity Walk campaign.
The Charity Walk will be held at 6:30 a.m. May 17 at the Historic County Building and is open to the public.
Coffee and Zumba exercise will take place a half hour before the walk, which gets underway at 7 a.m. and takes walkers through Lihue on a 2.9-mile course. Following the walk, participants can enjoy entertainment, prize drawings and breakfast on the lawn.
Stephanie Reid of the St. Regis Princeville Resort said money raised on Kauai stays on Kauai. During the 2013 walk, nearly $201,000 was raised and 43 Kauai nonprofits received help.
Pledge forms are available at Ace Hardware stores and the Menehune Mart stores on the island.
Any contribution is appreciated, but a suggested minimum contribution of $35 will earn a commemorative shirt. The trucker’s cap, bearing the ‘”Kauai, as why” message and framed with the logo slipper is available for $16, $10 of which will directly benefit the charity walk.
“Last year, we raised a historic amount,” Sosner said. “Our goal this year is $202,000 and having 2,200 walkers participate. The more money we raise, the more Kauai nonproft organizations we are able to support.”
Leading up to the May 17 walk, people have an opportunity to participate in the annual Charity Walk Bowling Tournament on April 12 at the Kauai Bowl.
Two sessions will be offered — from 3:30 to 6 p.m. for families and friends, and a 6 p.m. start.
On May 10, Kukui Grove Center will be the site for the Countdown to the Charity Walk from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with entertainment, a silent auction, walker recruitment and exhibits.
