Corey Agena and Anna Broyles of the Hanapepe Colts were among two of the eight participants who qualified for the Pop Warner National All American Recognition and Wescon scholarships.
Millie Ah Hee, scholastic coordinator for the Kauai Pop Warner Football League, said Agena, a tackle with the Colts program, and Broyles, a cheer squad member, earned certificates of excellence and Wescon scholarships during the annual Wescon convention held in Anaheim, Calif. last week.
In addition to the pair of Hanapepe Colts, KPWFL participants Moanikealohilani Felix-Keamoai, a cheer member for the Kekaha Titans, Junelle Tangalin, a cheer member for the Kapaa Eagles, Drewan Pigao, a cheer member for the Lihue Patriots, Jaykob Nakaahiki-Young, a tackle football player with the Kapaa Eagles, and Wentworth Rivera III of the tackle football program with the Kapaa Eagles, also earned certificates of achievement from the Wescon Region.
To qualify for National All American Recognition and Placement, applicants must attain a grade point average of 96 percent or higher for the entire school year.
The KPWFL scholar-athletes competed with thousands of applicants throughout the Western Region of the Pop Warner program to earn these national and regional honor, Ah Hee said.
The scholar-athletes will also be recognized during the annual jamboree, which opens the 2014 season later this year.
