WAIMEA — Two home runs in the first two innings churned up nine runs for Waimea on Wednesday at the Waimea Canyon Park.
Waimea (2-0) added five more runs in the fourth inning en route to a 14-2 win over the Kauai Red Raiders (1-2) in the Menehune’s home stand.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the first inning, Alyssa Miyamoto jumped on Aleigha “Red” Scovel’s second pitch for a grand slam to left-center field for the quick 4-0 lead.
Miyamoto also singled in the fourth inning and scored twice for the game. Catcher Karylee Rye Malapit added a three-run homer in the second inning to complete a 9-0 run.
Waimea also got hits from Sienna Santiago, Bailey San Agustin-Nordmeier, Shania Rita and Saecha Padasdao-Oyamot.
Waimea finished the day with seven hits to Kauai’s six in the game shortened by the 10-run ruling.
Waimea pitcher Kiani Kamakea held Kauai at bay for three innings, giving up two hits, striking out two and allowing no walks. Kauai scored twice in the fourth inning on two hits. Jennifer Doiron singled to right field and Chase Tokita got aboard on a fielder’s choice. Railee Layosa pushed both runners home on a double to left field.
Waimea closed the door with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Kauai added two more hits in the fifth frame when Yoshimori and Doiron both singled, but were left stranded.
With the win, Waimea will host Kapaa in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Waimea Canyon Park.
