LIHUE — Four Kauai High School students in the Future Farmers of America program are heading to Oklahoma City.
Jacky Lin, a freshman, Jasmine Benham, a junior, Chantal Rusaw, a sophomore, and Keith Jose, earlier won the 50th annual Hawaii State Conservation Awareness Program contest to earn eligibility for the national competition April 29 to May 1.
Tuesday, the students were visited by Laurie Yoshida, representing Dupont Pioneer, who contributed $2,000 to help the students get to Oklahoma City.
“This is part of approximately $48,000 Dupont Pioneer has awarded to Kauai schools for their respective science programs,” Yoshida said. “It’s a good way for Dupont Pioneer to give back to the community which includes the children of our workers.”
Rusaw said Kauai High School participated in the state competition last year, but came up short, finishing in second place.
“The competition determines the best capability of the land, whether it be crops, or animal husbandry,” Rusaw said. “It also determines how good it is for building houses based on some of the land’s major features.”
