KAPAA — KIF softball is underway and the Menehune started off the season with a comeback win.
Waimea High School erased an early 6-2 deficit to defeat Kapaa 16-12 on the Warriors’ home diamond Wednesday afternoon.
“I told them just keep on staying disciplined and things are going to work out,” said Waimea head coach Teddy Perreire. “We got some good hits and turned around the game.”
After allowing six runs in the second inning, a six-run surge gave Waimea a 10-6 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
The runs poured in for both teams until Waimea came out on top.
“We came out fighting,” said Kapaa head coach Aulani Kaui. “We only have one senior and lots of underclassmen. I think we’re doing OK. We just got to keep working at practice.”
Warriors assistant coach Scott Kaui added Kapaa’s team played well considering the school almost didn’t have a season.
“We’ve only been together the week of the Waimea tournament. Prior to that, we almost never had a season. We had seven players,” he said. “I just told them for a team that just came together the week of (Feb. 20), you guys are doing good. Just got to work hard.”
Kapaa will play a doubleheader against Kauai High School on Saturday at Isenberg Park. The first game will start at 10 p.m.
Waimea will play Kauai on Wednesday at Waimea Canyon Park at 5:30 p.m.
