The host Waimea High School tennis program split its series against Island School Saturday at the Waimea High School tennis courts.
Led by No. 2 singles player Marcus Pereira, the host Menehune controlled the boys’ courts over the Voyagers, 4-1, while on the ladies’ courts, Waimea’s Lani Rae Green, girls No. 1 singles player, scored the Menehune’s sole win as Island School walked off with a 4-1 win, according to results provided by Adrian Alvarez.
Green posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Island School’s Michaela Fitzgerald.
Alex Obert overcame the challenge by Waimea’s No. 2 singles player Kylah Gruspe en route to taking a 6-2, 6-0 win.
The Voyagers controlled the doubles court when the Island School duo of Katy Davidson and Julia Flagg defeated the Menehune pair of Rhea Arios and Julia Hirano, 6-3, 6-1.
Ashley Larken teamed with Whitney Summerhays to defeat the Waimea pair of Hope Coyasop and Karla Bermudez, 6-1, 6-0.
Mabel Kha teamed with Brianna Griep on the girls third doubles court to defeat the Menehune pair of Chazlyn Aki and Rochelle Dela Cruz, 6-1, 6-1.
Island School claimed its sole win on the boys’ court in the first singles when Davis Huffman got the better of Waimea’s Bradley Cano, 6-3, 6-2.
From there, Waimea posted its wins, Pereira defeating Island Schools’ Sam Goldberg, 6-0, 6-2.
Bradley Lumabao teamed with Chris Corpuz on the boys first doubles court to get past the Voyager pair of James Papa and Ian Cowden, 6-1, 6-2.
Waimea’s Gilson Guillermo paired with Patrick Cowell to defeat the Voyager duo of Quentin Allen and Andre Anderton, 6-1, 6-0. The match on the third doubles court went to Waimea’s Riley Saiki and Marc Serapio by default.
With the split, Waimea prepares to host Kauai High School at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Waimea courts.
The Voyagers host Kapaa High School at the Kauai Community College courts, also starting at 10 a.m.
