The effort fell short as Kauai golfer Trevor Kua plowed through the wind punctuated with bouts of passing showers to card the day’s best round at 81 (42-39) to lead the Kauai boys to a 31-stroke lead, 350 to Kapaa’s 381 during the second match of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf.
On the girls course, Kauai golfer Hiilani Alana, a sophomore, powered to the girls’ best round 90 (49-41) to lead the field of girls.
Janae Park (49-53) of Kauai finished tied with Waimea’s Kawena Warren (49-53) at 102.
Kauai golfer Kiri Oshiro filled in the third spot for the Red Raiders at 111 (54-57) followed five strokes back by Dillyn Sakai at 116 (54-62). Sharae Cua rounded out the Kauai field of golfers at 139 (62-77).
Kari Whitworth topped the Island School girls at 102 (48-54) followed by Salisa Pegeder ending at 122 (58-64).
Waimea’s Samantha Nichols carded the best round for the Menehune wahine, finishing the round at 99 (50-49) followed by Warren and Bailee Taeza carding a 141 (81-60).
Helping the Kauai boys to its second win in as many weeks, Jamie Amimoto braved the weather to finish at 85 (41-44) to follow Kua at four strokes off the pace.
Jacob Viquela finished in the Kauai No. 3 spot at 88 (44-44) followed by Keith Jose carding a 96 (48-48) and Vance Tokita closing at 104 (51-53).
Other Kauai golfers on the course included Jeremy Felezardo (46-59-105) and Ian Castro (58-63-121).
Following the Kapaa leaders, Mitchell Alves filled in the No. 3 spot for the Warriors with a 100 (47-53), seven strokes ahead of Landen Ishida (50-57-107). Tyshawn Cain rounded out the scoring Warriors at 115 (56-59). Justin Donios rounded out the Kapaa golfers at 124 (58-66).
Kilikai Ahuna took the course for Island School, finishing the round at 118 (63-55).
KIF golf moves to the Puakea Golf Course Saturday with the first groups teeing off from noon.
