Marilyn Matsumoto and Helen Nakano (hanafuda, anyone?) got excited when Gregg Nakano worked with Elton Ushio of the Kauai Civil Defense Agency to prepare a film on disaster response and recovery.
The crew from the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center in Washington, D.C., including Gavin Smith, Jim Schwab and Carolyn Harshman, worked through interviews with local government leaders, including Tom Batey, who said he lived in the Emergency Operating Center for six weeks.
Uncle Herman Paleka was stuck on the Kapaa bypass for nearly an hour, but made it in time to meet up with Judy Lenthall, about the time Nalani Brun had to leave.
Helen and Marilyn thought it was exciting to have these people interview those who actually went through the hurricane and create a course which would help other communities face disaster.
