NAWILIWILI — “It’s no April Fool’s,” said Ron Wiley, the KQNG Radio Group on-air personality. “It’s a quarter century of being on the air.”
The deadline for Wiley’s quarter drive is April 1, coinciding with the date he started on the air for the KQNG Radio Group.
“This is Laura’s idea,” Ron said about his wife. “A quarter to celebrate a quarter of a century.”
Wiley’s goal is to raise at least 100 pounds of quarters by April 1, at which time the total will be turned over to the Kauai Independent Food Bank.
Kelvin Moniz, executive director of KIFB, said Wiley’s drive will be part of the KIFB Spring and Food Drive which launched, coincidentally, about the time Wiley got the idea for his quarter drive.
“Spring is here and it is time for our annual Spring Healthy Food and Fund Drive,” Moniz said. “The generosity and caring of our wonderful Kauai community will again help our innovative programs and agency partners.”
Moniz said the hard economic times have produced a sharp increase in demand, and KIFB continues to rise to the challenge.
“We continue to expand our Keiki Cafe and Backpack programs, the Kupaa Kokua Kupuna seniors program, and the Uluwehi Emergency Food Distribution programs while continuing to distribute to our partner agencies,” Moniz said.
He said the impetus of KIFB is not to just increase the food bank’s programs, but to promote food quality rather than just food quantity.
The goal of the Spring Healthy Food and Fund Drive is $40,000 and 40,000 pounds of food, the same as the recent Holiday Food and Fund Drive.
