LIHUE — When basketball players return to the Isenberg Park basketball courts in June, they will be greeted with a new look.
Work on the new court started Tuesday when crews from Site Engineering started tearing up the old asphalt court and tearing down the old basketball standards.
Site Engineering was awarded a $210,900 contract to demolish and remove the asphalt from the court as well as the concrete curbing. The contractors will also install a new asphalt surface on a compacted base, install a sport surface on the asphalt specifically for basketball, and install a 36-inch Americans with Disabilities Act compliant sidewalk and concrete slab and curbing, states a county release.
Additionally, Site Engineering crews have been tasked with assembling aluminum bleachers for the area, installing a chain link fence and basketball standards, and repairing a light post base in the area.
“Taking care of our park facilities is important so our families can enjoy recreational activities offered at the different locations,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. “Besides Isenberg, we have several other park projects planned for this year, including the Kekaha Gardens Park, playground resurfacing, and repair of the Kealia Beach parking lot.”
Repairs being worked on at the Isenberg basketball court are in accordance with the mayor’s Holo Holo 2020 vision for Kauai which calls for all organizations, businesses, residents and visitors on Kauai to be part of creating an island which is sustainable, values the native culture, has a thriving and healthy economy, cares for all — keiki to kupuna — and has a responsible and user-friendly local government.
