Loni Delaplane, Ryan Girard and Jonathan Kalk, Kauai Community College Math faculty members, made a presentation at the recent national “Achieving the Dream” conference in Orlando, Fla. The conference brought together over 1,000 participants from more than 200 community colleges in 34 states to focus on improving student success. The KCC presentation focused on the college’s Math 26 course, which has nearly doubled the percentage of students making it to and passing college level math.
• Kauai Community College and the Surfrider Foundation-Kauai will host a conference on the impact on Kauai of the March 2011 tsunami in Japan. Experts on ocean circulation will address questions about any debris that came to Kauai and if anything radioactive made its way across the Pacific. The conference will be held on Saturday, March 15 in the KCC cafeteria from 9 a.m. to noon.

• The college’s Business Education Division has a new provisional program scheduled to begin in the fall semester. An associate of science in business degree will prepare students for entry-level positions in business, industry and nonprofit organizations. It is designed for students who seek to gain a solid foundation in the basic business concepts and skills necessary to contribute and create solutions in today’s business environment.
Upon successful completion of this program, students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to apply management, marketing and accounting concepts to improve operational performance in a business setting. • Dr. Gilbert Adair, lecturer in English, is having his book “Syzem, Book One: A Book of Earth and Sea” published next month by Veer Books, a publishing house based in London. Dr. Adair calls his book “a cultural/historical/geographical translation of Book One of William Blake’s poem ‘Milton.’”
