After being rained out Saturday, Kapaa and Waimea high schools finished their season opener on Wednesday afternoon.
The Warrior wahine beat Waimea 4-1 while the Menehune boys won 3-2.
“It’s really fun to see the kids come out, play and have a lot of fun. (There were) some really close matches,” said Kapaa coach Rick Wanek.
In one of the boys singles matches, Kapaa senior Kalani Murakami defeated Waimea’s Bradley Cano 6-4, 7-6 (6).
It was one of the matches that was in progress on Saturday before the weather forced the game to be postponed.
“It was really intense. It was really close. It could have gone either way,” Murakami said. “I’ve never won against him until now … I’m really stoked, to be honest.”
In the other boys singles match, Kapaa junior Matt Steinohrt beat Marcus Pereira 6-0, 6-3.
“He beat me last year, so it’s nice to come back and (win) this year,” Steinohrt said after the match. “I had a better serve this time around. I knew what I was getting into. I knew I had a really good forehand. Tried to hit it to his backhand and it worked out.”
In one of the girls singles matches, Kapaa’s Casey Nakamura won against Waimea’s Shay Jim.
Jim was leading in the first set 3-2 but withdrew from the match after injuring her ankle. She said she suffered from a medium sprain and hopes she won’t have to sit out for long.
“When I hit, I hopped … when I landed down, I rolled it,” Jim said. “Right when it happened, it was super, super sore to the point where it brought me to tears.
“It’s my senior year and I might be out for a couple of matches. That’s just unfortunate,” she added.
Kapaa will play against Kauai High School on Saturday at Kauai Lagoons. Matches are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
Waimea will also play Saturday morning against Island School at Hanapepe Courts.
