LIHUE — Kauai Police Department has identified the man killed in Tuesday night’s fatal traffic crash.
Samuel Mitzel, 28, of Kilauea, died following a crash that occurred around 7:25 p.m., Tuesday, when a northbound Ford pickup truck driven by James Monroe, 51, sideswiped a southbound Jeep SUV on Kuhio Highway, just south of Wailapa Road, before colliding with Mitzel’s oncoming Dodge SUV, causing the Dodge to overturn.
A 55-year-old Kilauea man who was a passenger in Mitzel’s Dodge was initially transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and later medevaced to Queen’s Hospital on Oahu. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.
The 50-year-old Kilauea woman driving of the Jeep SUV was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Monroe was also treated at Wilcox and released from the hospital on Wednesday morning.
Monroe, 51, was arrested after his discharge from the hospital on charges of negligent injury and negligent homicide.
The accident remains under investigation. It is Kauai’s first traffic fatality in 2014.
