LIHUE — A three-car accident in Kilauea on Tuesday evening has claimed the life of one man and injured three others.
According to Kauai Police Department, the crash occurred at around 7:25 p.m., when a northbound Ford pickup truck sideswiped a southbound Jeep SUV on Kuhio Highway, just south of Wailapa Road in Kilauea. The pickup truck then struck an oncoming Dodge SUV, causing the Dodge to overturn.
The male driver of the Dodge SUV sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.
The male passenger in the Dodge was initially transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and later medevaced to Queen’s Hospital in critical condition.
The male driver of the Ford pickup and female driver of the Jeep SUV were transported to Wilcox Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Kuhio Highway was completely shut down for roughly six hours while first responders worked to clear the scene. Kauai Dispatch reported that both lanes were open again to traffic at 1:34 a.m. on Wednesday.
The accident remains under investigation. This is Kauai’s first traffic fatality for 2014.
