LIHUE — Waimea resident Arthur Brun has filed to run for a County Council seat in this year’s election. He becomes the third person to declare a candidacy for the seven-member governing body.
“I just want to make a difference and be a voice for the people of Kauai and what they want,” the 42-year-old said Monday. “I feel that we need the voices of Kauai residents to be heard.”
Brun, who has worked for Syngenta for about 10 years, is a field director for PONY Baseball and a past Waimea Youth Baseball Association president. He also serves as an umpire for Division II college softball on Oahu and high school baseball and softball on Kauai.
Among his main priorities, Brun said he wants to continue work on a proposal by former Mayor Bryan Baptiste and Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. to create an adolescent drug treatment facility on Kauai.
“We really need one here on the island,” Brun said.
His other priorities include working on alternative waste disposal solutions for the Kekaha Landfill, building a compromise to bring back Friday night high school football games and finding more ways to create affordable housing solutions on Kauai.
“I know you hear it every year about housing, housing, housing, but I want to do some research and look at what we can do for housing and agriculture on the island,” Brun said.
County Council Incumbent Mel Rapozo has also filed nomination papers.
Apart from Rapozo and Brun, former County Councilman KipuKai Kualii has also filed his County Council nomination papers last month, according to county election documents. All seven County Council seats held by Rapozo, Ross Kagawa, Jay Furfaro, JoAnn Yukimura, Tim Bynum, Gary Hooser and Mason Chock Sr. are up for election this year.
Seats held by Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., Rep. James “Jimmy” Kunane Tokioka (D-Koloa-Wailua), and Rep. Derek Kawakami (D-Wailua-Haena) are also up for re-election this year.
The last day for candidates to file nomination papers is June 3.
