LIHUE — Waimea High School senior Kawena Warren finished with a state qualifying standard and a state consideration standard Thursday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation qualifying track and field meet at Vidinha Stadium.
Warren’s performance helped lead the Menehune girls to 154 points for the top team score despite being one of the smaller schools. Island School girls finished with 137 points, Kauai High School girls tallied 110 points and Kapaa High School girls rounded out the leaderboard with 76 points.
The Waimea senior was joined by Kauai’s Christian Sarmiento who ended with a state qualifying standard and a consideration standard to help lead the Red Raider boys to a top team scoring of 167 points over the Kapaa boys with 143 points. Island School had 87.5 points and Waimea had 62.5 points.
Warren lost little time asserting herself, but dominated the girls 100 meter hurdles on a 16.67-second run, more than three seconds ahead of second finisher, Leann Lopez of Waimea (19.93).
Warren’s first-place finish in the event earned her a consideration standard based on the 2013 Hawaii High School Athletic Association numbers. Her run bested the 17.74 consideration (electronic timing) mark before she turned her attention to the high jump.
During the leaps, Warren soared to a 5-foot jump for first place and equaled the state’s qualifying standard. The Waimea senior was challenged by Kapaa freshman Heather Faretta, who cleared the state consideration standard with her second-place leap of 4-10, two inches above the state consideration.
Warren also came close in the long jump and leaped to a first-place finish of 15-05, an inch short of the state consideration 15-06.
Kauai’s Sarmiento also notched his state qualifying standard in the boys high jump and clearing 6 feet, the state standard, for first place.
He added a consideration standard with a first finish in the long jump and leaped to a final 21-03 and bettered the consideration standard of 20-00.75.
Coming on the heels of Sarmiento, Waimea’s Henry Delos Reyes picked up a pair of consideration standards, his first came in a second place finish in the high jump where he cleared 5-10, two inches better than the state consideration 5-08.
His second consideration gave him a gold medal in the triple jump with a leap of 41-09, surpassing the state consideration of 39-10.50 and coming close to the state qualifying 42-03.25.
Ahead of the events, Kauai’s Samuel Charles pointed to the boys 200 meter sprint. His finger tapped the board.
“This one is mine,” he said. “Some time in the season, this one’s going to be mine.”
But that was not on Thursday as Charles picked up a consideration in the 400 meter run where he finished first at 53.64 seconds, about one-third of a second better than the consideration standard of 53.94.
The Kauai High School boys wrapped up its final consideration performance in the boys 4×100 meter relay when the “A” team crossed first on a 45.64 run and beat the consideration standard of 46.84.
Kauai High School’s cross country standout Krista Schnackenberg earned a consideration standard with her first finish in the girls 800 meter run, stopping the clock at 2:29.22, nearly seconds ahead of Island School’s Chan Hsu, another cross country standout.
Chan stopped the clock in second place at 2:34.09. Both girls beat the state consideration 2:34.94.
The KIF qualifying track and field meet will continue at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
There is no admission charge to view the qualifying or preliminary KIF meets. Admission will be charged for the KIF Championship Meet on April 25.
