LIHUE — A Kapaa man will serve a year in jail for two burglary and theft cases.
Corbin William Perini, 22, was arrested on Feb. 10, 2013, on two counts of second-degree theft. He pleaded no contest on June 12, 2013, and the agreement allowed for conditional release to U-Turn For Christ recovery program pending sentencing.
But the conditional release was revoked on Aug. 21, 2013, after Perini committed another burglary and theft. He has been held in jail awaiting sentencing after a second plea deal.
Perini apologized to the court for his failure and said he had been doing well with a job, a vehicle and his own place to live. It was after the passing of his mother that he committed his acts.
State Deputy Public Defender Stephanie Sato’s request for a deferred acceptance of the no-contest plea was denied.
She said Perini is a nonviolent offender without prior felonies. The state of California did not want to pursue extradition in another matter, she said.
The best thing to do is to get Perini into residential rehabilitation and close supervision on probation, Sato said. He doesn’t have support on island and U-Turn For Christ is willing to help him again.
County Second Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Vogt said Perini came to Kauai to attend U-Turn For Christ programs. He committed the initial second-degree burglary, and while awaiting sentencing he committed another first-degree burglary.
Vogt asked for a one-year jail sentence with probation. She also asked for $3,500 in restitution to the four victims. Many of the items were jewelry with personal value and are irreplaceable, she said.
Judge Kathleen Watanabe said she would honor the plea agreements.
“It is up to Perini to comply and succeed,” she said. “If he fails probation then he is looking at another motion for revocation and a possible five-year prison term.
